About Me: Living Fully, Sharing Freely
I’m Derek, but friends call me Watty. My journey has been anything but ordinary—every twist, turn, and stumble shaped who I am today. From catching my breath for the first time in Aspen, Colorado’s thin mountain air, to the first time I stepped on a sailboat, to embracing the electric pulse of New York City and the chaos of New Delhi, I’ve experienced life’s extremes and grown through every step.
The turquoise waters and whispering trade winds of St. John introduced me to “Island life”—a call to explore the vastness of the world, just like the ocean itself. As a captain, I guided people to hidden reefs, felt the freedom of wind and sun-soaked adventures, and soaked in every salty sea breeze. But it wasn’t all smooth sailing; the challenges and lessons became as important as the memories.
India and Nepal were transformative in ways I never imagined. From the vibrant streets and breathtaking mountains to sacred spaces for meditation, I was humbled and awakened. These journeys pushed me to confront my inner limits and taught me to listen deeply—to the world, to others, and to myself.
Choosing sobriety almost six years ago remains both my hardest challenge and greatest triumph. Letting go of that buzz meant reclaiming my mornings, my clarity, and ultimately, myself. It’s not perfect, but each day feels more like my own.
After years spent on the sea and navigating the bustling cities of New York and Boston, I’ve found my way back to the mountains, settling in Park City. Here, I work as a Recreation/Adventure and Snowboard Instructor at the National Ability Center. In this role, I have the privilege of sharing my passion for the outdoors with people of all abilities, helping them experience the joy of snowboarding, mountain biking, climbing and more. It’s incredibly fulfilling to see individuals break barriers and achieve new milestones.
I feel that same rush when mountain biking through dense forests or hiking toward the horizon, where the sky feels just within reach. These peaks and trails remind me of where I’ve been—and who I’m becoming. The mountains call me back, grounding me with their fresh powder, winding trails, towering trees, and breathtaking views. There’s nothing like the speed, the sharp turns, and the thrill of carving my own lines.
And yet, the sea will always remain a part of my soul. The freedom of being pushed by the wind and the wonder of creatures beneath the surface continue to stir something deep within me, a connection that time can never erode.
Both the mountains and the sea are my compass, guiding me through this journey called life.
Land and Sea Adventures 88 isn’t just my passion—it’s my invitation. I’m here to ride alongside you, carve trails, and share the wild spirit of the sea. Every story I tell and every moment I share reflects my truth, my hope, and my call to you.
Let’s journey together—because life is far too short to stand on the sidelines.
