Salt Pond Bay isn’t just another snorkeling spot—it’s my personal sanctuary. Before I had a truck, I’d hop on the dollar bus to hike and snorkel here. During charter breaks, I’d grab a mooring ball and spend days exploring the bay’s tranquil beauty. With its white sand beach, serene waters, and vibrant marine life, this protected cove offers an unforgettable escape for anyone willing to make the journey.

Getting There
Salt Pond Bay is tucked away on St. John’s southeastern shore, just off VI-107. From Cruz Bay:
- Take Centerline Road (Rte 10) or North Shore Road (Rte 20) toward Coral Bay.
- At the bottom of the steep hill, turn left at the “T” intersection.
- Drive about 4 miles past The Tourist Trap and Concordia.
- Park along the roadside near the sharp curve, then hike approximately half a mile to the beach.
Be prepared for an uphill trek on your way back!
Why It’s Special
- Marine Life Marvels: Snorkel the coral reef areas labeled #1, #2, and #3. The two breathtaking rock outcrops (#2) near the last mooring ball are a must-see. Even after countless figure-eights around these spots, there’s always something new to discover.
- Unique Wildlife: The salt pond behind the beach sometimes attracts flamingos, and during the right season, you might even collect salt.
- Hiking Adventures: The Ram Head Trail provides stunning panoramic views, while Drunk Bay offers rugged coral shorelines and whimsical visitor-made sculptures.
Snorkeling Highlights
Salt Pond Bay is one of St. John’s top snorkeling destinations, teeming with vibrant marine life and picturesque underwater landscapes.
Recommended Snorkeling Routes
- Route #1: Swim edge and head towards the last mooring ball and return to shore. This is a can be the calmer spot.
- Route #2: Head toward the last mooring ball, then circle around the two rock outcrops in a figure-eight pattern. (Depending on the current)
- Route #3: Swim the edge the cross the sandy channel (watch for boats) to explore more coral reefs. On good days, you can continue snorkeling along #3 for a picturesque experience.
